MRI Division:  What's New?

MRI Construction Update (January, 2007)

The Division of MRI is undergoing major renovation in the MRI Building (Nelson Basement).  Phase I is complete:  the renovated Body MRI reading room is now adjacent to inpatient MRI.  Phone numbers to contact MRI Radiologists remain the same (x5-4753 Body MRI, x5-4146 for Neuro MRI).

Delivery of 2 of a total of 4 Siemens Magnets (Treo and ultrashort bore 1.5 T Espree with interventional table) has been completed.  Phase 2, replacement of older inpatient MRI units with a 3T and 1.5T Treo unit will be completed approximately April 2007.

Because of the critical nature of the inpatient MRI facilities, there will be considerable impact on inpatient scanning.  Current plans call for utilization of additional university MRI equipment on a temporary basis during the construction period.

Equipment Upgrades

The Division of MRI has upgraded the scanner located on the fifth floor of Blalock.  The scanner, a 1.5 Tesla Siemen's Avanto.  It has a short bore and is primarily used for cardiovascular indications and cardiovascular research.

The 3T scanner located in the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center has been upgraded and is currently a Phillips 3T Achieva MR Scanner (see below).

The mobile MR, located outside JHOC in McElderry Circle, has been replaced with a new, state-of-the-art, Siemens's Avanto and is operational as of February 6, 2006.

Awards and Honors

Under David Bluemke, MD, PhD's leadership, Johns Hopkins Division of MRI has been awarded a $1.3 million R01 Grant entitled "Coronary Atherosclerosis Evaluation by Arterial Wall MRI" as part of the MESA trial at Hopkins.  The MESA program has brought approximately $19 million in funding to Johns Hopkins University for the evaluation of early, subclinical atherosclerotic disease.  This is a multi disciplinary program involving faculty and staff in Radiology, Cardiology, and the School of Public Health.  (July 2005)

Cum Laude Award: Scientific and Education Exhibits, European Congress of Radiology, Vienna 2005: MR imaging of the urrethral sphincter in incontinent women (C-0420).

Cum Laude Award: Scientific Presentation from the Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance 2005: MR imaging of  urethral sphincter and support ligaments in women. http://scbtmr.org/research/rsrch_awrds.html

David Bluemke, MD, PhD gave the Morrison Memorial Lecture at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts entitled, "Cardiac MRI: 21st century".

Katarzyna Macura, MD, PhD received the Outstanding Faculty Teacher of the Year 2005 Residents' Award, Department of Raidology, Johns Hopkins University.  http://www.rad.jhmi.edu/residents/awards.htm

Under Katarzyna Macura, MD, PhD's leadership as President, the American Association for Women Radiologists (AAWR) has received the 2005 Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)_ Women in Medicine Leadership Development Award.http://www.aawr.org

Katarzyna Macura, MD, PhD was selected as a consultant for the In Vivo Imaging Workspace of caBIG (the cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid), NCI's informatics initiative.

Katarzyna Macura, MD, PhD has finished in the top 10 for the "Women's Imaging Specialist" category by Medical Imaging Industry (voted by readers of Medical Imaging magazine).

New MRI Equipment at the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center

The MRI Division has recently upgraded a Philips 3T MRI at the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center.  The 3T scanner is twice as powerful as other existing clinical MRI units at Johns Hopkins.  The 3T MRI is particularly suited for neurofunctional applications, but will be useful in certain situations for high resolution detail in the brain and spine.

The 3T MRI is the first and only clinical MRI scanner of its type in the Baltimore area.  The installation is an outgrowth of the 3T research established by researchers in the Department of Radiology at Johns Hopkins in conjunction with investigators at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, where a research "twin" of the JHOC magnet is located.  An additional research 3T research unit with interventional MRI capabilities has also been installed in the Neuroradiology corridor of the hospital basement.

Together with the state of the art mobile Avanto 1.5T MRI and the GE LX 1.5 T MRI, JHOC now houses 4 MRI scanners.

Appointments for patients and physicians may be made by calling 410-955-4100.

Questions about patients who may be suitable for 3T scanning may be directed to Steve Ringgold, R.T. at 410-955-5546, or one of the staff MRI physicians.
